Assessments by a Personal Trainer

health tip of the week

An OHSA or orthopedic screening assessment (OHSA) is the first step in a personal coach's evaluation of a client. The SSA is an examination of a client's balance, range of motion, stability, and coordination. The OHSA and SSA are performed from a standing position. The SSA will reveal the client's balance, coordination and any other medical limitations. A SSA or a physical exam should be completed before a training session starts. It should also be done during the session. The trainer will get an idea about the client’s fitness level and health so that they can ensure that the client remains in the program.

Depending on the client's level of fitness, the PT assessment may include several components. An interview is an important component of the assessment. It is important that the client and his/her goals are discussed. Some clients may not need the most comprehensive test, but they might benefit from a basic one. A personal trainer assessment will also include a physical activity readiness questionnaire. This will allow the client to disclose their medical history and limitations. This questionnaire is necessary to assess if a client can exercise.

A HT assessment will give detailed information about the client's current health. A personal trainer can design a tailored fitness program by using either a HT/FMS. The FT and HT tests help determine how much work a client can do. The HT test can be used to assess a client's strength, fitness and endurance. If a PT is able to see that a client is improving it should be able make adjustments to the training session.

Before a HT assessment, the client must warm up. They will then be asked to do a stepped-up-and-down test with their other foot. They will then be supervised for one minute. The client must be able to control their breath throughout the THT and maintain the correct form. A client who fails to maintain proper form may have instability issues or overactive muscles.

Another HT is an ideal candidate for a girth assessment. This type HT uses biometric tests to measure the client's muscles, fat, and body. HIITs can also measure the body composition of students. The HIIT test is an excellent tool to determine a person’s fitness level. These tests will also show a person’s overall health.

FAQ

What is a good 7-day workout schedule?

A seven-day program should include three days of cardio training (running, biking and swimming), two strength exercise (using free weights or weight machines) and one flexibility/core work out (yoga, Pilates). Each activity must be completed at least once per week. The total time for each session should not exceed 45 minutes.

Cardiovascular Exercise: Running/Biking/Swimming

Aim to do at least 60 minutes per week of cardio. For best results, aim for 75 minutes per week. Cardio exercise can stimulate blood flow and increase muscle growth.

Strength Training

Cardio exercises work on the heart and lungs. Strength training works on the muscles and bones. Strength training can help you burn calories even when you're not working out.

Flexibility & Core Workouts

Flexibility and core workouts are great ways to strengthen your entire body. Both yoga as well as Pilates are great choices.

You need to perform two types of exercises when building muscle mass. These are the isolation exercises as well as compound movements. While isolation exercises focus on specific muscles, compound moves target multiple muscle groups simultaneously.

Choose exercises that test all your major muscle groups to improve your workouts. This ensures that you are always working hard during each session.

What is the difference between Aerobic Fitness and Anaerobic Fitness?

Anaerobic fitness refers the body's ability to do intense physical work while lacking oxygen. During periods of high-intensity exercise, we use anaerobic pathways to provide enough energy to complete the task. Anaerobic pathways can include glycolysis, creatinephosphate, the Phosphagen, and lactic acids.

Aerobic fitness, however, refers to the continuous practice of low-intensity aerobic exercise. When performing aerobic exercises oxygen is used to fuel the cells. In other terms, the aerobic pathway has more energy that the anaerobic.

To run a marathon you need to first increase your aerobic capacity. You won't be successful if you focus only on your anaerobic ability.

Aerobic fitness is also referred to as cardiovascular fitness. The most common methods for assessing cardiovascular fitness include VO2 max testing or step tests.

VO2 Max Testing

VO2max is the maximum oxygen (O2) that your body can use while exercising. This test measures the body's ability to use O2 while exercising.

This test measures cardiovascular fitness in a way that is most accurate. The test is difficult to administer because it requires expensive equipment.

Step Tests

Step tests are a quick and easy way to test your cardiovascular fitness. Based on your age and weight, they involve running or walking on a track or treadmill for a specified time.

These tests can be conducted almost anywhere and are cheap, simple, and easy. For instance, you can walk on a treadmill for 2 minutes, rest for 1 minute, repeat this process for 20 minutes, and then stop. Throughout the session, your heart rate should be within a certain range.

This method is known by the "Bruce Protocol". Bruce, himself a runner, created this protocol after realizing that he would not feel his heart rate increase when running longer distances.
